THE Bible makes it clear the apostles did not practice or teach sola scriptura. They taught that, in addition to Scripture, sacred Tradition (the oral transmission of the gospel) is authoritative and must be adhered to and be faithfully handed on to future generations. This scriptural teaching has been maintained by the Church.

"I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold fast to the traditions, just as I handed them on to you" (1 Cor. 11:2).

"I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus . . . took bread, and said, 'This is my body that is for you. . . . This cup is the new covenant in my blood.'" (1 Cor. 11:23-25).

"Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours" (2 Thess. 2:15).

"We instruct you, brothers, in the name of [our] Lord Jesus Christ, to shun any brother who conducts himself in a disorderly way and not according to the tradition they received from us" (2 Thess. 3:6).

"Take as your norm the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard this rich trust with the help of the Holy Spirit." (2 Tim. 1:13-14).

"Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And what you heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will have the ability to teach others as well" (2 Tim. 2:2).
