ONE group of knowledgeable, articulate, and
bold young people engaged an anti-Catholic in debate for hours and
kept him so involved that he missed handing out his own flyers to
thousands of people walking past him. We were impressed! Many priests
and sisters stopped to give us words of encouragement: "Boy,
are we happy to see you Catholic Answers people here!" "Thanks
so much for doing this!"
When I was at the convention center I paused to rest,
and the door near me was pushed open from the inside, apparently by
the air conditioning. Just at that moment a priest was speaking to
stands packed with young people. He said that although there was a
lot of anti-Catholic literature being passed out in Denver, there
was one good booklet he hoped everyone would go home with, Pillar
of Fire, Pillar of Truth. We'd just spent two exhausting days
distributing the booklet to countless thousands, and here was a blessed
moment, a real confirmation.
On our final day we drove to St. Thomas More Parish
and gave booklets to two thousand French students. Most of them felt
they could read English well enough to handle the text. The French
clergy said young people from their country were innocent about the
efforts of other denominations to evangelize Catholics. They noted
their kids were especially susceptible to being deluded since they
knew nothing about the anti-Catholic prejudice we have so much of
in the U.S. The priests said they were interested in having a French
translation of Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth.
